We provide Papua New Guineans access to light and power. We achieve this in our two business activities, called; Off-grid Power Solutions and On-site Re-fuelling Solutions.
Our two business activities are concerned with energy supply in Papua New Guinea. We recognize that energy supply in Papua New Guinea is largely through a fixed line system by PNG Power Limited. It owns a grid that supplies electricity, however, the grid is not connecting many parts of Papua New Guinea as it should be.
Even where there are grid connections, there are instances of frequent power outages requiring property owners and generally business houses to install and operate standby generator sets. Moreover, costs of extending the PNG Power grid are prohibitive in a rugged and unforgiving terrain like we have in Papua New Guinea. While that is so, the overall population of Papua New Guinea is growing rapidly on an annual basis.
The 2010 National Population Census recorded about 7.2 million people in Papua New Guinea. In January 2014, a study by the World Bank reported that of the 7.2 million people, almost 6.3 million are not connected to the existing PNG Power grid. Looking ahead this means, every year as the population of Papua New Guinea increases, more and more Papua New Guineans will not have access to lighting and power. This only puts more citizens of Papua New Guinea into a disadvantaged situation and contributing to social ills in the society.
Electricity doesn’t cause well-being, but it enables people to create opportunities themselves and join in the kind of activities that introduce and/or stimulate freedom, change and progress. Trio Energy was set-up in 2013, specifically with this in mind and runs, Off-grid Power Solutions and On-site Re-fuelling Solutions.
Trio Energy offers the best solution to Papua New Guinea's energy needs. Our Technical Division can design, build and manage your entire project. We are a proud partner of the “Lighting Papua New Guinea” project which is backed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Lighting Papua New Guinea is aiming to provide affordable and good quality light and power to 1.3 million households within a period of 5 years starting in 2014.
Our mini-fuel tankers, drivers and crew have been inducted and certified by Puma Energy PNG Limited to access their fuel terminals in Port Moresby and load bulk fuel for our customers. We have Standard Operating Procedures to guide the running of this business.
Trio Energy’s Off-Grid Power Solutions use solar lighting to generate energy for off-grid power consumption in PNG. The solar lighting devices are in three categories.
Single Function: Bright, portable solar lighting designed for home, work, and schoolwork.
Multifunction: Versatile, powerful light and power products with mobile chargers for home and businesses.
Power System: Modern, grid-like solar power systems for homes and businesses.
Pico-powered Lighting Systems (PLS). Trio Energy is distributing PLS in the PNG market. PLS are small, impact-resistant, quality-assured portable lighting devices such as lanterns, mobile phone chargers and single lamps. They are uncomplicated and maintenance-free solar lighting devices for the Base of Pyramid (BoP) consumers that are outside national electricity grid network. They have two functions. The primary function is lighting and secondary function is mobile phone charging.
In economic terms, the bottom of the pyramid is the largest, but poorest socio-economic group in the world. Collectively, more than 4 billion people live on less than US$2.50 per day. This field is also often referred to as the "Base-of-the Pyramid" or just "BoP".
The phrase “bottom of the pyramid” is used in particular by people developing new models of doing business that deliberately target that demographic, often using new technology to help empower people who can become entrepreneurs and create growth in their communities.
In Papua New Guinea, about 85% of its 7.2 million people live in rural areas and are disadvantaged in many ways. For instance, a significant number of them engage in economic activities that, without proper lighting, must end at sundown. Take for example, micro-retail outlets – commonly referred to as, trade stores, chicken formers, fishermen, smallholder crop farmers, and many more who cannot continue their micro-businesses without lighting. In industries like farming, fisheries and livestock, which have limited window for post-handling of products and delivery to market, limits to productivity created by lack of lighting can have serious consequences.
Trio Energy has the best solution to their light and power limitations. We are distributing d.light quality-assured portable solar lighting devices. The devices are designed to serve more than 2 billion people globally without access to reliable electricity. These customers want quality, flexibility, affordability; and they appreciate small-scale, reliable solutions that they can control.
| BoP CUSTOMER PREFERENCES (D.LIGHT) | |||

| Rank | Priority | Product Attributes | Customer Quotes |
| 1 | Save Money | Affordability, return on investment | “Stop burning what is earned” |
| 2 | Quality | Reliable, trustworthy, safe and clean | “I bought because they (solar lights)fit into my personal goal of giving my customers a good experience” |
| 3 | Control | Flexible - delivers power as needed | “Energy on (my) terms… Electricity would allow me to do much more.” |
A villager can easily use bicycles in rural areas of Papua New Guinea where road conditions are bad. They can easily clip the d.light S2 to the handlebars of their bicycle during the day to soak
Here a villager has extended his working hours into the night by using d.light S2 Study Lamp. He is involved in a micro-business activity. This villager in Keram River, Angoram District, East Sepik Province is buying alluvial.
In Port Moresby city where constant power outages are experienced, a city resident is using the d.light S300 to cook.
The S300 has a primary function of light and a secondary function of mobile phone charging. It can charge five different type of mobile phones.
A small trade store is well lit using the d.light D20 Solar Home System (SHS). The proud owner of this trade store can now extend her trading hours into the night and increase her income.
Solar Household Systems (SHS). SHS are fixed modules with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels that are mounted on roof tops and open ground surface. They capture the energy of sun (solar radiation) and generate energy for households, schools, and health facilities etc. that are off-grid.
Under PLS and SHS, Trio Energy has become a project associate of the IFC-backed “Lighting Papua New Guinea” project which commenced in 2014. Lighting Papua New Guinea is aimed at lighting 1.3 million households that are outside of the existing electricity grid. It’s a project with a time frame of 3-5 years. As part of that, Trio Energy is PNG’s authorized distributor of d.light’s PLS and SHS lighting devices in PNG. d.light is a market leader and award winning manufacturer of best quality solar lighting products. d.light operates in over 45 countries with over 15,000 outlets and it has sold over 6 million units of its products since its start-up in 2007.
Off-grid Power Solutions use two options from renewable energy to generate electricity instead of being connected to an electricity grid. This system is the best solution for Papua New Guinea where the existing PNG Power grid is not connecting 6.3 million people according to a study conducted in January 2014 by the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
We use Solar, Wind, or a combination of both, called; Hybrid. An Off-Grid system requires an Off-grid Control system, Generator and Battery Storage.
Trio Energy can support its clients to reach a System Design. Such a system helps to evaluate our customers’ unique location in Papua New Guinea and makes best use of all available natural resources to ensure your renewable energy solutions meet your individual needs.
Solar Power uses the power of sun to create light and power which can be used in homes and businesses. It is the best solution for PNG where we have plentiful of sunlight hours – about 22,000 hours in a year and where the existing electricity grid has not expanded since the 1980s.
Find out how Trio Energy can design and install a Solar Power system that best suit your needs.
Wind Turbines harness the power of the wind. They continually produce wind power regardless of whether the sun is shining. We are fully qualified to do a site evaluation to determine your capacity to generate wind power, design and install a Wind Turbine system to best suit your needs
We stock a vast range Wind Turbines and equipment such as Wind Inverters, Controllers, etc. Being a Wholesaler we are able to pass on the savings to you. If we don't stock an item you need we will be happy to give you a quote.
Third – Outdoor Lighting Systems (OLS). OLS are sustainable, energy-efficient solid state lighting fixtures for various applications, such as, area/site, roadway, floodlighting, pathway, dockyards, perimeter lighting and wall-mounted or ceiling uses.
Trio Energy is associated with Solar Electric Power Company (SEPCO) of USA for OLS. SEPCO has over 30 years in solar energy, having started in 1979. It is a pioneer in the industry and has designed, tested and patented several types of OLS. It has been exclusively manufacturing commercial solar lighting and off-grid solar power systems under the SEPCO name since 1994. Recognised as the leading industrial solar lighting company in the world, it has serviced clients such as, Pentagon House in USA, US Army, US Marine and Sydney Olympic Park. SEPCO not only provides its solar products to Trio Energy, it stands hand-in-hand with Trio Energy by allowing it direct access to its technical expertise and customer support services, such as, design, installation, warranty, service and maintenance.
The systems are completely self-sustained and off grid. The systems work no matter if the grid power is functioning or not, making them a sound investment for security or areas prone to blackouts. There is also a battery backup that provides 5 days of backup power storage for days of inclement weather or after a large storm.
The power is provided by the sun. What else can be better than that? The solar panels charge the battery assembly during the day and the controller switches to power the light from that reserve at night. In the morning, the process repeats itself.
There is absolutely no electric bill associated with off grid solar lighting systems. Just install the system anywhere it is needed and watch it shine. It does all the work for you and doesn’t require any grid backup or traditional dirty power sources.
Since each system does not rely on the grid power, you are in complete control of your solar powered light. If you require the light to operate only certain times, our range of control options will allow you to program exactly what you require. And if the power goes down around you, your light will still shine on, never relying on anything else but the sun.
Since the systems are self-contained, there is no trenching or underground wiring required with almost any solar lighting system. It allows the systems to be installed on a pole, reducing installation costs by not having to bring in drop down lines and trenching the ground to run costly wire. This also puts all wiring up high and out of reach of people vandalizing electrical wire for the copper.
There is literally nothing to installing a commercial solar powered light. Set the pole with the specific foundation requirements and put the solar power assembly, fixture and fixture mounting bracket on the top of the pole. We here at SEPCO provide a complete installation guide with every system and are available to assist with any hiccups you come across during your installation process.
The sun produces enough energy every 10 seconds to meet the world’s energy needs. Therefore, tapping into this unlimited energy source is the way to the future and protecting our planet against harmful CO2 emissions produced by dirty energy producers.
